Emerging ATM Threat

In the early morning hours of July 24, 2025, a well-coordinated group of suspects targeted a financial institution’s ATM in North Alabama. Law enforcement confirmed that 4 masked individuals in dark clothing exited a black sedan and approached two bank employees preparing the ATM for service. The suspects forced access to the machine and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

This was not a random act. The group operated with alarming speed and precision, and most concerning of all—this was clearly a planned and professional operation. Investigators noted that the suspects abandoned key items at the scene, including the machine’s cassettes and gloves, suggesting tactical decisions rather than carelessness. According to Priceville Police, multiple suspects moved with coordination while another individual likely remained behind the wheel of the vehicle, ready to drive the group away.

From our viewpoint in the financial security sector, this incident represents an evolving threat: these weren’t opportunistic thieves. This was a strategic hit, and there is every reason to believe this group could strike again.

At STS Group, we encourage all financial institutions to review their procedures related to ATM servicing and site awareness. Organized groups often stake out locations before making a move, and predictable service routines make institutions more vulnerable. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Vary your ATM servicing schedules. Avoid regular, predictable time slots that can be tracked by potential attackers.

  • Thoroughly scan the surrounding area before beginning any ATM work. Suspicious vehicles, parked observers, or loitering individuals should be taken seriously.

  • Limit onsite exposure time. Move with efficiency, and never assume rural or low-traffic areas are low-risk.

  • Use dual-person teams and maintain clear lines of communication throughout the process.

The financial sector is facing a more organized and calculated type of criminal. It is critical that institutions stay vigilant, review their security protocols, and communicate these risks to frontline staff regularly.
